Mexico – Isla Holbox
First Impressions:
Same country, different world compared to the pacific coast. The island itself is a large piece of sand reaching a couple of meters out of the water. It is deep inside the nature, but we expected a laid back place without cars and found something touristy, a small town with hotels with pools and many many ATVs. The prices were touristy as well. Nevertheless a beautiful and worth visiting place.
Day 1 – Travel
After spending a night in Cancun we took the bus and then the ferry to Holbox. On our first day we mostly walked on the beach and enjoyed the sunset. We ate a nice burrito at Taco Queto.
Day 2 – Exploring the famous sand bank
The second day, after our breakfast at Bilu we spent the morning on walking on the the Mosquito Sand Bank and beach. This is a very unique experience, if you have not been in a similar place. You walk in the sea in water which is ankle, knee or waist deep and end up on a small beach in the water. It takes about 2 to 3 hours to go to and go back from mosquito beach. To walk up to the Punta Mosquito it takes approx. one hour more. We did not go there but it is supposed to be even more beautiful. To find out how exactly to walk up to punta mosquito you got to ask a local. We had a very friendly host, who gave us a lot of information.
An other activity, which we decided not to do, is the bioluminescent plankton at Punta Coco. To see it in good conditions there has to be no waves and no moon. Unfortunately we did mot have the optimal conditions. Our last dinner on Holbox was at Artesano.
Next stop… Valladolid

Accomodation
If you prefer to go around on foot its probably better to stay on the right side of the centre and the main park. The beach is nice and with easy access, you are on walking distance to the centre and you can reach easier Punta Mosquito. You are far away from Punta Coco, though.
Transportation
We did anything on foot but there are a lot of golf car and buggy taxis. Note that all roads are sandy. It is also possible to rent a golf car, scooter or bicycle but mostly it is rented by the hour and it is quite pricy.
Activities
The main day activity is walking to playa Mosquito or further to Punta Mosquito.
The island is also good for kite surfing or kayaking.
At night you can do a bioluminescent tour at Punta Coco.
Or just chill on the beach.

We found the island touristy, but it still worth visiting. We also saw a wedding and a wedding proposal.
